Dobbs Ferry Schools Look to Increase Communication

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Dobbs Ferry Superintendent Lisa Brady believes improved communication with parents is one of the most important goals in the school district.  To help increase that communication the school district has all of its events on its website, emails sent to parents and also Brady’s blog.

In an attempt to reach more parents, Brady said it has become increasingly important for parents to register for the online portals and the K12 notifications on the school district’s website to increase that communication.  “We now have 73 percent of our parents that are registered with the portal, so that was a big increase,” Brady said.

Some local parents said the email notifications were more likely to be read as opposed to letters sent home.

“The mail gets thrown away a lot quicker, that’s for sure,” said Sandra Merrow, whose children attend Springhurst Elementary School.  “I can forward it to my husband if it’s something important.”

Brady said the schools have begun to cross reference other school documents such as emergency contact info with the list of registered users online to see which families have not signed up.

She said the district is currently trying to find out which families “are not registered for the portal, are not registered for K12 and at the building level individual phone calls are being made to those families to ascertain whether or not they have Internet access, if they just haven’t availed themselves to those opportunities.”

To take communications a step further, Brady said that the school district will begin to translate critical documents such as report cards, progress reports and notifications of teacher conferences into different languages. “We are very committed to making sure that every parent has access to what they need in order for their child to be successful in school,” Brady said.
