The program includes training hours and preparation for CASAC-T certification required for people to work as counselors with clients who have alcohol, drug abuse, nicotine dependence and compulsive gambling addictions. It is targeted for nonmatriculating students seeking to work in mental health programs, school prevention programs, correctional services, and private practice. The program enhances the credentials for clinical professionals such as social workers, psychologists, mental health practitioners, health care providers, and prevention specialists.

While CASAC classes are already held at the college’s Brooklyn Campus and the John Cardinal O’Connor Campus in the South Bronx, the new locations will enable CNR to offer its CASAC-T certification classes to a wider audience.

Students who complete certification receive a strong theoretical foundation, as well as practical training in substance use disorders through the five courses that take two semesters to complete. The program provides preparation for the state Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services state exam.
