Joan Walsh, 85, Hastings Registered Nurse

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Joan Agnes Walsh of Hastings-on Hudson and formerly of Dobbs Ferry resident died Jan. 28. She was 85.

Born in Manhattan, she was the daughter of Vincent and Helen Walsh Cavanagh. Raised in the Country Club section of Bronx, N.Y., Walsh attended Villa Maria Academy in the Bronx and graduated from the College of Mount St. Vincent with a bachelor's degree in nursing.

She worked as a registered nurse for St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan. She was a longtime school nurse in the Dobbs Ferry school system. She also worked as a registered nurse for the Sisters of Mercy at McCauley Center in Dobbs Ferry.

An avid reader, Walsh enjoyed crossword puzzles, knitting and spending time with her family, especially her 11 grandchildren. She was a parishioner of St. Matthew's Church. In 1951, she married James E. Walsh at Our Lady of Assumption Church in the Bronx. They moved to Dobbs Ferry in 1960.

Walsh is survived by five children, Joanne, of Manhattan, James E. (Teresa) Walsh Jr., of Dobbs Ferry, Maureen Meehan, of Darien, Conn., Judy (Timothy) Kelly, of Rye, and Colleen (Stephen) Pecylak, of Hastings-on- Hudson; and 11 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband; two brothers, Vincent and Donald Cavanagh; and a son-in-law, William Meehan.

A Mass of the resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Church of St. Matthew in Hastings-on-Hudson. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dobbs Ferry or Hastings Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
