With the Walgreen's store opened at Ashford Avenue and Broadway, a residential commercial property development underway directly across the street and a residential building site just south of Gould Park, a half-mile stretch of Ashford Avenue is alive with construction.
The White Church Cemetery work, which began last fall with clearing of trees and salvaging of headstones, is now completing the repair of the historic stone wall where column entrances are being re-pointed and a new rail fence will be installed along Ashford Avenue.
Plans for the reconstruction include a new entrance and pathway that will lead visitors and residents to a memorial into the north east corner of the property, which will be partly funded by a donation from Stop & Shop.
Along with the replacement and repair of headstones, the entire property will be smoothed and leveled, new grass planted and native trees placed.
At the Aug. 6 regular meeting, the Dobbs Ferry Board of Trustees also approved a war memorial monument to be paired with the American Revolutionary Monument previously designed and approved.
"This new monument will honor the war dead buried in the cemetery, identified with the help of the Historical Society and the review of old burial records," Dobbs Ferry Mayor Hartley Connett said in a report to the community. "The plan is to have the memorials in place by early fall, in time for Veterans Day and a re-dedication of the property."
