DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. Two leg surgeries in less than five months didnt seem enough to make Dobbs Ferry Eagless tackle Nick Becerra lose his good mood.
There he was last Saturday afternoon at Gould Park, happily talking to friends and supporting his teammates during their homecoming game against Rye Neck, which the Eagles won 43-0. Dressed in his number 75 Eagles T-shirt, he seemed ready to play, except for the crouches and maybe a few extra pounds.
What can you do about it? he said about his injury. Becerra fractured his right femur June 1 during a basketball game, he said.
I broke my leg, my ankle and I tore a bunch of ligaments, he said, adding that doctors installed 10 screws and three plates in his leg during a reconstruction surgery.
Most of them are temporary. Two of them are for life, he said about the screws.
Becerra was healing, but then on the fateful day of Sept. 11, while mowing his yard, he inadvertently stepped in a pothole, he said. Some screws snapped and my leg broke, he said. (Yes, for the second time, he said.)
This football season is definitely over for Becerra. But, being a junior, hes confident that he will be back in the next one. I have to lose weight first, he said.
