Hastings Topped by Croton in Mayclim Tourney

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y – Ian Thom and Wes Turner scored 14 and 13 points respectively to lead all scorers as the Croton boys’ basketball team defeated Hastings 47-26 in Friday’s opening round of the 31st Mayclim Basketball Tournament at Croton High School.

“We played very good pressure defense through the game and got good fast break chances,” said Thom, one of the Tigers three captains. “We have to finish better and do more on offense to beat Dobbs Ferry.”

The Tigers advanced to Saturday’s 7 p.m. tournament final against Dobbs Ferry, which has won the last two Mayclim tournaments and defeated Putnam Valley in the opening round.

Hastings (3-4) will play Putnam Valley in Saturday’s 3 p.m. consolation.

Turner, who keyed the Tigers’ pressure defense, looked forward to Saturday’s final.

“Dobbs Ferry is a very good team that does everything well,” said Thompson, who scored 10 points. “I thought we did some good things (tonight). We’re going to have to play better on both ends and finish our shots.”

The Tigers opened a quick 13-4 lead to open the game and extended the advantage to 22-8 in the second quarter. Hastings had trouble penetrating the Tigers defense and failed on several long-range tries.

Dillon Healy led Hastings with 11 points, but the Yellow Jackets struggling once again to finish breaks and make outside shots.

Croton led 35-17 after three quarters and coasted through the fourth quarter as Coach Bill Thom used his bench liberally.
