HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. The Hastings Democrats nominated their candidates for the board of trustees and the village justice Monday night for the upcoming March election. Trustee Jeremiah Quinlan, who will not seek reelection, nominated incumbent Nicola Armacost for one of the two open seats on the board.
If there is any hope in reducing or at least keeping our taxes reasonable it will be because of her hard work and her intelligence, he said. She is fiercely independent, intelligent and sharp as an ice pick.
Armacost, who is running for reelection, and Marge Apel, a former trustee, were the nominated for endorsements for the board of trustees election and Joseph DiSalvo was nominated to be reelected as village justice. The Democratic Committee had nominators speak at the meeting in the library and explain why they chose to support each candidate.
I will always be pleased to nominate someone who understands that in public service yesterdays opponent could be tomorrows ally, that bridges not burned are bridges one day crossed again and that the public good is served by linking arms, joining forces and working together, said Hastings Mayor Peter Swiderski of Apel.
Swiderski described Apel as deep in experience, sharp of mind, a Democrat true and true.
Nominated candidates also spoke to the crowd in the Hastings library to accept the honors.
I think its very important as judge to listen to those in front of you and respect those who come before you, DiSalvo said.
Apel spoke about issues that are of utmost importance in her opinion including affordable housing, the volunteer fire department, maintaining a strong downtown, budget and taxes along with creating programs for children and seniors.
Implementing the comprehensive plan is a very important task that needs to be done in order to maintain the beautiful village as we know it, Apel said.
Armacost said Swiderski recruited her for her first term and charged her with reviewing the village budget and identifying ways to save money and generate new income.
Im happy to say that as a result of this work we are now in the best financial position our village has been in for many years, she said.
The Hastings Republicans will hold their caucus Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in the community center. The village election for the open positions will be held Tuesday, March 20.
