DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. Many fundraisers in the villages help raise money for local public school students, but even those without kids in the school system still show their support at School Night Out according to PTSA treasurer Teresa Walsh.
You live in a small community and a lot of people think everybodys involved in the same thing, but there are a lot of people out there that do not have kids in the school district or have any attachment to it and they will come out and support this, she said.
The PTSA runs the fundraiser a few times throughout the school year and partners with local restaurants to raise money for the Dobbs Ferry School District. Walsh said this time around the event name, Its Common Sense, was chosen because it falls on the same day that Thomas Paine published his pamphlet of the same name in 1776.
Lets look into what happened on this date and it kind of grabbed me I figured why not, it makes sense, its common sense to come out and eat, Walsh said of the double entendre.
Local restaurants will give back 10 percent of checks to the school district on Tuesday, Jan. 10 as part of the promotion with that money going towards new science labs in Dobbs Ferry.
School Night Out not only helps the school district but also the restaurant owner on a weeknight when business might not be at full capacity, the PTSA said in a statement.
Walsh said the event is a popular one because its a community building event that helps raise money without much of a hassle for anyone.
The moneys there basically and we tap into it, she said. Its like found money really.
Restaurants participating this time around are Dobbs Diner, Sams Italian Restaurant, Harpers, Doubledays, Lemon Tree, Tomatillo, Cedar Street Grill, Sushi Niji, Orissa and Off- Broadway.
