After spending 12 years at North Rockland as a phys-ed teacher - and seven years as varsity wrestling coach - Andy Guccione is enjoying his time during his fourth year back home at Suffern.
The current Suffern Director of Athletics attended Suffern High School, where he was an All-County and All-Section wrestler, and played lacrosse. He went on to SUNY Cortlandt, where he continued to wrestle for two years.
He was thrilled at the chance to come back home.
"My favorite part is that I got to come back to my home town, where I always lived, and give back to the community that was so good to me," Guccione told Daily Voice. "It's really exciting to have the opportunity to come back here and work... I've always cared about the school district."
We asked Guccione what he thought was one of the biggest challenges facing today's high school athletes.
"I'd say the ability to play multiple sports," Guccione said. "There's a lot pulling on kids these days - clubs, and a lot of other things, and they find it hard to balance. So you have a lot of kids specializing at an early age, when they could be successful at two or three sports.
"Every sport has something to offer," he added, "something that the other sports may not have. And you can get intangibles from one sport, that might help you in another sport."
