Ramapo Police Charge Suffern Man With DWI

RAMAPO, N.Y. -- Ramapo police arrested a 42-year-old man from Suffern on a DWI charge Wednesday.

The arrest came about when an officer stopped a vehicle for a defective headlight and erratic driving on Route 17 South, near the New York State Thruway entrance, according to officials.

The driver, who had a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit, was subsequently arrested for DWI, police report.

The defendant is due back in Ramapo Town Court in August, according to officials.

Ramapo police officers responded to nine motor vehicle accidents Wednesday.

Sites of the accidents included: Viola Road in Monsey; Route 306 in Monsey; Route 59 in Monsey; New County Road in Airmont; Route 59 in Airmont; North Main Street in northeast Ramapo; South Main Street in Chestnut Ridge; New Hempstead Road in New Hempstead; and McNamara Road in Wesley Hills.

One accident involved injuries, and one accident was a hit and run, police report.

Ramapo police handled 141 calls Wednesday, including 17 alarm activations, 12 medical emergencies, two fires and one burglary. A total of six arrests were made, according to officials.

Charges included DWI, criminal possession of a controlled substance, endangering the welfare of a child, possession of stolen property, aggravated unlicensed operation and a warrant for another agency.
