Police Search For Hit, Run Driver In Fatal Suffern Accident

SUFFERN, N.Y. -- The Ramapo Police Department is investigating a fatal accident in Suffern in which a a hit-and-run driver allegedly struck and killed a bicyclist Monday night, according to police.

Police received the call at around 10:56 a.m. that a bicyclist was down on the side of Route 202 between Spook Rock Road and Old Haverstraw Road, they said.

When officers arrived, they discovered a male face down on the non-road side of the guard rail, according to police.

He was reportedly in serious medical distress and showed injuries to his face and body and was unable to speak to officers due to the severity of his injuries, police said.

A bicycle, presumably the victim's, was on the side of the roadway with damage to the front end, according to police. 

The damage to the bicycle and the injuries to the male are reportedly consistent with both having some type of contact with a vehicle in motion, police said.

There were no other vehicles in the area and no one came forward about the accident, according to police.

The male was treated by paramedics at the scene of the accident, then he was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital emergency room where he was pronounced dead a short time after, said police.

The case is currently being investigated as a leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, according to police.

The hit-and-run vehicle may have sustained damage to the front end and/or the passenger side, said police.

It is believed the vehicle was traveling towards Suffern at the time of the crash, according to police.

Police have not released the victim's name pending notification of his family, they said.
