The man suffered no serious injuries when he crashed into a utility pole about 2:25 a.m. and caused a small power outage, police said, adding that he ran from the car and was not found until later in the morning.
The man, whose name was not released, was arrested and arraigned in Ramapo Town court, where he was charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and operating a vehicle without an interlock device, misdemeanors, and several traffic and vehicle violations, police said. He was later released without bail.
An ignition interlock device forces a driver to submit to a breath test before starting a car. Those who are ordered to use one have typically been found guilty of a recent charge related to drunken driving.
The car crash was one of six reported in the town Friday, police said, noting that they responded to incidents at North Main Street in New Hempstead Road; North Airmont Road in Airmont; Route 202 in Pomona; South Airmont Road in Airmont; and two crashes on North Main Street in Hillcrest.
Police said the department responded to 143 calls in total Friday, including 20 calls for alarm activations, three for fires and eight for medical emergencies.
Six people were also arrested Friday in addition to the 58-year-old Airmont man, police said.
Their names were not released, but they were charged with such crimes as unlawful possession of marijuana, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, petty larceny and harassment, police said.
