Hill lived in Monsey in Rockland County.
Though Hill had a lead role in the first season of "Mission: Impossible" in the 1960s and other credits to his name, his work on the 1990s series "Law & Order" made him an icon in many households until he left the series in 2000.
The Twitter page for NBC's "Law & Order" calls Hill's death a huge loss, while "Law & Order" actress Marska Hargitay expressed her condolences to Hill's family on her Twitter page.
By the end of his career, Hill had amassed a long list of credits on stage and screen, including roles in “It’s My Turn,” “Yentl," and "Running on Empty," The New York Times reports. He married Selma Stern in 1951 and had four children, then married Rachel in 1967, and the couple had five children together.
The son of a furniture-store owner, Steven Hill was born Solomon Krakowsky in Seattle. He moved to Chicago, then New York (in the 1950s), after graduating from college.
Hill married his first wife, Selma Stern, in 1951. They had four children before divorcing in 1964. Hill and second wife, Rachel, whom he married in 1967, have five children.
