RAMAPO, N.Y. -- Police continue searching for the driver who struck and killed a bicyclist from Pomona and drove off on Monday night along Route 202, and have released the identity of the man killed.
Officers found the bicyclist, identified as William "Matt" E. George, 53, with serious injuries to his face and body, unable to speak, police said. George's bicycle, which had sustained front end damage, was nearby.
"The damage to the vehicle and the injuries to the male are consistent with both having some type of contact with a vehicle in motion," Detective Lt. Mark Emma said. "There was no other vehicles in the area and no one came forward."
George died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. Rockland Paramedic Services Inc. treated him at the scene with the Ramapo Valley Ambulance Corps, whose personnel transported him to the hospital.
Police believe George was hit by a dark colored, possibly blue, 2000 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, or pickup truck. The SUV or truck should have damage to its front end and/or front passenger side.
Emma said officers were called to Route 202 between Spook Rock Road and Old Haverstraw Road at about 10:56 p.m. Monday.
George was heading toward Suffern along the narrow shoulder of the road by the guard rail, Emma said, estimating the lane as about 3-feet wide. He said that George was dressed in dark clothing, but his back-pack had bright yellow stripping.
"The driver, in my opinion, knew he or she hit something," Emma said. "We have some evidence. It's not like the guy was laying on the side of the road."
The Ramapo Police Accident Investigators and detectives are investigating. Police believed the vehicle was traveling toward Suffern.
Officers arriving at the scene discovered a male face down on the non-road side of the guard rail. He was in serious medical distress and showed injuries to his face and body and was unable to speak to officers due to the severity of his injuries, police said.
A bicycle, presumably his, was on the side of the roadway with damage to the front end. The damage to the vehicle and the injuries to the male are consistent with both having some type of contact with a vehicle in motion. There was no other vehicles in the area and no one came forward.
At this time the case is being investigated as a leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident.
