Measles Outbreak: Cases Surpass 2023 Numbers, NY Among Dozens Of States Reporting Sickness
Less than a month since a case of measles showed up outside of New York City, the number of cases has more than doubled across the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). On Friday, April 12, the CDC announced that the total number of measles cases in the US in 2024 has reached 121 — far surpassing last year’s number of 58 — with cases being reported in 18 states and jurisdictions, including New York State. New York City Declares Measles Public Health Emergency In Select ZIP Codes
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a public health emergency Tuesday, April 9, in select zip codes in Williamsburg, following a measles outbreak affecting the Orthodox Jewish community. As part of the declaration, unvaccinated individuals living in those ZIP codes who may have been exposed to measles will be required to receive the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine in order to protect others in the community and help curtail the ongoing outbreak, said the Mayor's office. Measles Cases Hit 43 In Rockland
As the number of measles cases continues to rise across Rockland County with at least 43 confirmed cases reported, and 10 suspected cases, county health officials have scheduled additional free measles vaccine clinics. In addition, Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert's, Rockland's health commissioner, has ordered all unvaccinated students in "private schools" in New Square, Monsey, and Spring Valley to stay home. Traveler Who May Have Exposed Newark Airport To Measles Went To Area
Some at Newark Liberty Airport may have been exposed to the measles last month by a passenger from Israel who continued traveling to Rockland County, New Jersey State Health officials said. The passenger from Tel Aviv, Israel arrived at Terminal B and may have visited other parts of the airport between 5:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 28, the New Jersey Health Department said. The passenger then went to Rockland County. Three Cases Of Measles Confirmed In Putnam, More May Have Been Exposed
The Putnam County Department of Health has confirmed three positive cases of measles and said others may have been exposed earlier this week. Two are Putnam residents and the third lives in Connecticut, said Susan Hoffner, health educator of the Putnam County Department of Health. The hometowns of the three were not released.
