Brewster and most other local teams got their morning session in Monday, but by afternoon the heat was in the mid-90s, forcing teams inside to hit the film and weight rooms.
Many squads, like the Bears, were back out on the field by early evening.
Brewster, which missed the playoffs, and finished 4-5 last fall, is looking for more success this season.
"One thing that excites me is that we have 40 players out, that's one of our bigger squads," said Bears coach Ed Mulvihill. "It's healthy competition, and that will help us in the long run. The second thing I like is we finally have some decent size. We have a little beef up front, which is good, and it's been a hard-working group. They've worked hard all summer. That's why I feel pretty good even after just the first day."
Mulvihill said the team will go as far as returning All-Section QB Matt Catalano takes them.
"It starts with Matt Catalano, a returner who threw for just under 1,700 yards last year," Mulvihill told the Daily Voice. "He's a smart kid, and knows everything our offense has put together. He's got a fantastic arm, and we'll put a lot of things on his plate. He'll run our offense from the field.
"We've got a good runnng back in Jeremy Meissner," Mulvihill added, "and another senior, Jack Guida is a kid up from JV - he was QB for the JV and was a bit of a star. He's got the potential to be a breakaway back at the varsity level, and he'll help us a great deal. We also have a few good receivers, and if we can play some physical defense, I think we'll be alright."
Brewster opens the season at home September 4 vs. Hen Hud.
