Pedestrian Critical After Being Hit By Car in Kent

KENT, N.Y. – A Carmel man remained in critical, but stable, condition Thursday after being struck by a car nearly two weeks ago, Kent police said.

Edward Benton, 71, was crossing Route 311 around 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, when he was hit by a westbound 2011 Volkswagon, according to Police Chief Alex DiVernieri.

The accident occurred near the Lake Carmel General Store & Deli.

Benton was first taken by emergency crews to Danbury Hospital, but later transferred via helicopter to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

He sustained severe leg and head injuries, police said.

Route 311 is straight and the speed limit is 30 mph there, the police chief said.

Benton was wearing dark clothing when he stepped into a lane of traffic and was hit, DiVernieri said.

The driver was not charged, DiVernieri said..
