The fire was reported around 8:56 p.m. Thursday, Jan., 3, a fire was reported on Lake Avenue Extension in the area of the "Puppy Love" building, said the Danbury Fire Department on Facebook.
When approaching the scene Engine 26 could see the heavy fire from Kenosia Avenue, causing Lt. Mark Miguel to transmit a second alarm.
Deputy Chief Steve Williams arrived and took command, finding a fully involved 100 x 50-foot warehouse building located behind Puppy Love which is attached.
As Troop A firefighters fought the fire, other firefighters, being assisted by numerous civilians, including nearby restaurant workers and dozens of people off the street, were able to rescue approximately 86 puppies from the building, the department said.
The fire chief said on the scene that the Good Samaritans formed a human chain to pass the puppies to safety. The store reportedly had just received a new shipment of puppies.
Once rescued, Danbury Police and Animal Control officers were able to relocate the puppies to safety in a nearby building.
Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton said on Twitter: "These pups are all saved tonight thanks to #Danbury residents. And special thanks to our 1st Responders."
The business owner and their vet responded to the scene to check all the puppies who all checked out fine, the department reported.
There were no injuries to either pets or humans.
The Danbury Fire Marshals Office was on scene for the investigation.
