The boats were christened at a ceremony Thursday at the Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park, according to a press release.
Sheriff Donald B. Smith, County Executive MaryEllen Odell, state Sen. Terrence Murphy, R-Yorktown, and Art Hanley, chairman of the Putnam County Joint Veterans Council, gave brief remarks at the sunset ceremony.
“Our veterans continue to serve our community right here at home in so many different and wonderful ways,” Odell said at the event, according to a press release.
Veterans Charles J. Moore, Pete Pennelle, Karl Rohde, and Larry Sherblom each read proclamations honoring the four veterans for whom the boats were named – U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. William A. Todd, of Mahopac, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Gouverner K. Warren, of Cold Spring, U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Albert L. Ireland, of Nelsonville, and U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. John C. McCloy, of Harrison.
Smith, Putnam sheriff and a retired Army brigadier general, lauded state Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey for her office’s involvement with the effort.
Also, Harvey gave the sheriff the idea of naming the boats for local veterans about two years ago.
“Commissioner Harvey turned to me and asked why our boats did not have names, and from that spark began this collaborative initiative of the sheriff’s office and our local veterans to name the boats in honor of these four great heroes of Putnam County,” Smith said Thursday, according to a press release.
