PELHAM, N.Y. Pelham police responded to a call from Village of Pelham building inspector Leonard Russo about a foul stench coming from 522 Sixth Ave.
Russo told officers on Thursday that he received several complaints from area residents about the smell. He told police that the homeowner had passed away and he did not have an active key holder on file.
Police smelled the odor when upon arrival at the home and found the rear door unlocked. When police opened the door, hundreds of flies flew out of the door and made it difficult for police to get inside.
Officers called the Pelham Fire Department for backup. Firefighters found the refrigerator and freezer filled with different kinds of meat. Electricity to the house had been turned off.
The conditions were hazardous for area residents, according to the police report. Police attempted to find a key holder for the house but were unable to do so.
Russo asked police to help rectify the situation, according to the police report.
