Duo Opens Pelham Antique Store Despite Economy

PELHAM, N.Y. - Robert and Kit Portrake opened Timeless Treasure and Art Gallery on Sparks Avenue in September. The two are not worried about their venture despite the struggling economy.

Kit and her partner always wanted their own store and that dream came true for them.

“I rented space from other people for years,” said Kit. “They sold my things, but that meant I couldn't be in the store to talk to customers and give them information. So my things were being sold by other people. My partner, whom I've known for many years, has done shows for a lot of years. Having our own store was something we always wanted to have.”

The pair plans to carry a variety of items.

“We plan to carry an eclectic mix of fine arts, collectible's, and gifts so there will be something for everyone in our gallery at all price levels,” said Kit Portrake.

They both know a great deal about their items because they have years of experience. Together, the pair has more than 20 years of experience and knowledge of American paintings, Asian art, American pottery and American and European glass and porcelain.

The Portrakes would like to set up a monthly lecture series so customers can listen to experts and collectors while looking at the antiques.

With Thanksgiving and the holidays fast approaching, Kit Portrake has a message for all those wondering what to buy their loved ones.

“For Thanksgiving, we have unique hostess gifts,” said Kit. “We are stocking the store with vintage toys and collectibles. Don't you dare go to the mall for gifts.”
