Peekskill Board Of Education Candidate: Shannon Casiano

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Shannon Casiano is one of six candidates running for three seats on the Peekskill City School District Board of Education.

Casiano, 41, grew up in Peekskill and attended the Peekskill city schools. Casiano worked for Aramark food services in their health care support services department as a supervisor for 20 years. She has two sons who graduated Peekskill High School, a daughter attending Peekskill Middle School and a son in the elementary school. Why did you choose to run for the board of education this year? My reason for wanting to become a board member is I feel we need to make some changes in our school district. Peekskill rankings our low and we have a system that is not working. Although we have some great teachers and other staff members if the administration, staff, and community does not establish better communication and develop a more productive relationship things cannot change. I would continue to research and educate myself on all issues regarding the education system and work to help build our district up. My love for children and wanting the best for not only my children but yours is what motivates

What issues in particular would you like see addressed? 

We need to review our policies and make sure they are being followed and make changes to the ones that are not working. Our children must obtain skills that are necessary to succeed in the future this includes the tech skills. I want all our children to have equal footing when it comes to their education. We have to find money to keep our school running the way it needs to I think if we look to see what some other districts have done such as community events reaching out to corporations to invest into our schools, and grant writing for funding this could help. Although I have experience in budgets, I feel a school budget is something I will have to educate myself with
