PEEKSKILL, N.Y. - A temporary lockout has been lifted at the Peekskill Middle School after police apprehended a “suspicious individual” that is currently in custody.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, a suspicious individual was spotted on the middle school campus, prompting administrators to enter its precautionary lockout protocol, district communications specialist Laura Belfiore said. When the individual was approached by law enforcement, they “began to depart the middle school grounds in a similarly suspicious manner.”

According to Belfiore, Peekskill police immediately put out an all-points bulletin, and the suspect was swiftly apprehended, allowing the middle school to lift the lockout. The suspicious individual is currently in police custody and is being questioned as to their purpose of being on the grounds.

All students are safe, Belfiore noted.  “It is business as usual,” at the Peekskill Middle School. Coincidentally, lockdown drills - which had nothing to do with the situation at the middle school - were also performed at the Hillcrest and Oakside Elementary schools.”

“The Peekskill City School District would like to thank Peekskill Police Chief Eric Johansen and the Peekskill Police Department for their fast response to today’s matter,” the district said in a statement. “We also thank our Peekskill Middle School administration, faculty and staff as well, for their role in keeping our students safe.”
