This Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. with the community gardens at Forest View Garden will be open for residents to help dig in and prepare the ground for planting and to purchase a garden plot for the 2013 season.

The garden, located on Route 6 at the base of Forest View diagonally across from the First Hebrew Congregation, launched its first growing season in 2012. Volunteers pitched in to make the property, donated by the City of Peekskill, ready doing everything from clearing land, installing fencing, building out individual plots and fundraising to make it all possible.

“We had a great first season last year laying the ground work and getting up and running and hope to expand on our success,” said Joann Boniello, one of the garden’s volunteers. “We invite Peekskill residents to get into the community spirit by purchasing a plot, volunteering with the group or both." The garden team is asking for volunteers to bring shovels, rakes and gloves to help prepare for planting. While you’re there you can purchase an individual plot for $30, or if they don’t already have a green thumb and want to ease into gardening to have access to organic, locally grown produce, there is a “People’s Plot” for individuals to take part in for a suggested donation of $20. Cash and check payments will be accepted. Checks should be made payable to PCG/HRHC. PCG is also in need of a tool shed, donations of materials and supplies, and monetary donations to help with the cost of maintaining the site.

In addition to allowing families and individuals, without land of their own, access to fresh, nutritious food, the American CommunityGarden Association boats additional benefits of community gardens including:
