Peekskill Feast Looking For 'Miss Festa Italiana'

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – The organizers of Peekskill's Festa Italiana are combing the area for a special young lady of Italian decent to represent this year's event.

Festival organizer Frank Cimino said the committee is looking for a festival queen who is is not only beautiful but also smart and charitable to represent the feast, which starts on Aug. 10.

"We'll expect her to walk around with the crown and taking pictures with people," Cimino said.

All contestants must fit the following criteria:

• Must be of Italian descent.• Must be single.• Must be between ages of and 24.• Must be willing to learn a few phrases in Italian.• Must submit a one-page, typed paper in standard typeface on: “What charity wouldyou volunteer for and why?”• Must submit a color photo in digital format.• Must pay a $20 nonrefundable entry fee. The winner will receive a crown, a red rose cape along with a sash, a scepter, a bouquet of flowers and a $500 savings bond. In addition, a check for $250 will be donated to the winner’s favorite charity.

The Peekskill-based White Plains Linen will donate money and gifts to the winner, as well as table linens for the entire festival.

Area women have until Friday, Aug. 3, to apply to compete in the event, which will be held Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Peekskill Elks Lodge on Brown Street.

"We'll be dressing it up with a red carpet, signage and flowers," Cimino said. "We are also looking for a few more judges for the event."

The street festival, which celebrates the Feast of the Assumption, is Aug. 10-12 in downtown Peekskill.
