A young woman killed in a horrific Connecticut crash earlier this week was the first child and only daughter of a former NBA player. Tiara Wheeler was 24 years old. Her father, Tyson Wheeler, played for the University of Rhode Island men's basketball team as point guard from 1994 to 1998 when the Rams advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight before being drafted by the Toronto Raptors. He later appeared in an NBA game as a member of the Denver Nuggets in 1999. A beloved former coach and athletic director in the Hudson Valley who was a star athlete in high school and college has died after battling cancer for over 15 years. Rockland County resident Charles S. "Chuck" Scarpulla, of Valley Cottage, died on Tuesday, April 11 at age 81. Scarpulla, the former Ramapo High School and Sleepy Hollow High School athletic director and Section 1 football coordinator was known for his coaching skills, but more importantly for listening, caring, and motivating young athletes. Eight lucky and talented college students studying STEM fields from Westchester County have earned a $5,000 scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year. The scholarships were granted by the Louis G. Nappi Construction Labor-Management Scholarship Fund, a major construction industry financial-aid program that was established by former Chairman Emeritus of the Construction Industry Council of Westchester & Hudson Valley, Inc., Louis G.
