Isaias: Utility Companies Face Fines Of $137M After Investigation Into Storm Response
Utility companies in New York are facing millions in fines for their muted and unprepared response to Tropical Storm Isaias after the New York State Public Service Commission completed its months-long investigation into their responses. Con Edison, Orange & Rockland Utilities, and Central Hudson now face fines of more than $137 million in total. While still catching heat for their response to Tropical Storm Isaias, utility companies in the Hudson Valley have been ordered to pay a record settlement for their response to the 2018 winter storms that left thousands in the dark. Lawmakers in Westchester are fearful that Con Edison may run out of gas before its announced gas moratorium takes effect next month. Westchester officials requested that Con Ed hold off on their announced moratorium as they gather information and seek solutions. The New York Public Service Commission is extending settlement talks with Charter Communications as the two sides potentially near a deal to keep the company in the state. Last July, the PSC issued an order kicking Charter out of New York, alleging that the company didn’t meet requirements to extends its network to underserved areas in the state.
