Sports Illustrated writer Richard Deitsch recently mentioned Chong in a piece highlighting UConn as the next girls' basketball dynasty. Chong announced in November that she would be committing herself to the University of Connecticut. Chong will play for Geno Auriemma, who guided the U.S. Olympic Women’s basketball team to the gold medal at the 2012 London Summer Olympics.
Deitsch said he sees Chong becoming a more-than-capable replacement for departing UConn guard Kelly Faris.
"While do-everything guard Kelly Faris, whose defensive intensity was an example for the younger players, is graduating, the Huskies will add perimeter depth with speedy 5' 9" recruit Saniya Chong, who can spell playmaker Moriah Jefferson (4.7 point, 1.8 assists)," Deitsch wrote in the piece.
Chong said previously she was excited to get a chance to play for UConn.
“I felt I had a connection,” Chong said in November. “We’re one big family here at Ossining, and I felt that at Connecticut. I felt I fit in perfectly with the girls and the coaching staff. The players’ personalities are all great.”
