Ossining High Pride Volleyball Working Team Skills

OSSINING, N.Y. – The Ossining Pride volleyball team fought three close sets in a recent loss to a visiting Yorktown team and one could see that the difference between winning and losing was more about being consistent than being skilled.

“We pretty much have all-around strengths on the court,” Pride senior captain Franny Sanchez said. “Our defense and passing girls have amazing talents in the back row, and our hitters, blockers and setters are very good at adjusting and making a good play out of pretty much everything when needed. Our weaknesses this year are working as a team and having that motivation to play hard against any team.”

The 25-18, 29-27, 29-27 loss to Yorktown may have gone the other way if the Pride girls, who are 3-6 so far in the fall season, had made two or three key plays in the extended second and third sets which went to extra points when the teams tied at 25-25.

The Pride enjoyed a successful season last year, going 14-7 and losing in the second round of the Section 1 playoffs to Yorktown.

“This year we can improve so much if we increase our communication around the court,” Sanchez said. “We sometimes have it and then it dies out. We can also improve on our motivation, if we get that motivation and will power to play an amazing game, we could be a very good team in our section, like last year.”

The Pride volleyball team includes seniors Tatiana Peterson and D’ijha Cooper; juniors Samantha Milani, Megan Shenefiled, Danielle Gervioso, Katie Baskind, Saniya Chong, Lydia Davis and Kathryn Polleta; sophomores Selena Drinks, Kiara Schaindlin; and freshman Madison Stroppoli.

The Pride will be working to improve its record this week against Westlake at home today (Tuesday) at 4:30 p.m., at Harrison Thursday (4:30 p.m.) and home against Beacon Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
