HARRISON, N.Y. The Ossining High girls varsity lacrosse team was anxious to finally start its season Monday. However, the Pride would have to wait a bit longer than expected.
The Ossining-Harrison game, originally scheduled for 4:30 p.m., was delayed 40 minutes while the teams waited for a second official to arrive. Once the second official arrived, Ossining opened with a run and gained momentum with each goal.
Alex Cristello scored a game-high six goals, and Danielle Gervacio and added five as Ossining defeated host Harrison, 19-7, in a Section 1 girl's lacrosse game. Ossining continues its busy week by playing North Salem next.
"We were really excited to play because we scrimmaged Croton and played pretty well against them," said Gervacio, a starter on Ossining's Section 1 Class AA-winning girl's basketball team. "It was frustrating because we weren't expecting that long of a wait. We were able to get a little more of a warm-up, and we became a lot more comfortable with the field so that worked out."
Gervacio opened the scoring 15 seconds into the game. Ossining won the opening faceoff with Cristello gaining control and leading a fast break. Cristello bore down on Harrison goalie Taylor Wolf, then fed Gervacio on the left post.
Ossining increased its lead to 3-0 on goals by Malone and Gervacio, during a man-up situation.
"We wanted to get off to a good start," Gervacio said. "Coach (Ricci) told us he wanted us to get out fast and push the ball. That's what we did, and we did a pretty good job."
Molly Malone scored four goals, and freshman Gabby Hagerman netted her first two varsity goals. Classmate Abby Squirrell also had her first varsity goal.
Alex Misisco led Harrison (1-2) with four goals, Cassidy Cohen scored twice and Christie Nannariello also had a goal.
