OSSINING, N.Y. -- How many teenagers who grew up loving science get to conduct science experiments in a genetics lab?

The work prepared Ossining resident Sandy Reisman for college where she'll major in biology with a focus on nutrition.

The new graduate of Solomon Schechter School of Westchester Upper School is headed to SUNY Binghamton this fall.

Luckily for her, these past two summers, and during her junior year, Reisman interned at in the genetics center at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in Tarrytown through a high school mentorship program.

Her latest turn, for seven weeks on a paid internship, allowed her to conduct experiments on her own and garner the lab skills she will need come fall.

"I have also been interested in science since I was little and research new scientific discoveries in both biology and nutrition in my free time," she said.

Looking ahead, Resiman said her schooling prepared her well for life's next phase.

"It is sad to leave such an amazing community I've been a part of since kindergarten, but I'm definitely ready," Reisman said. "Schechter prepared me so well both academically and socially to succeed in college and later in life, and I am excited to use all of my experiences in the next chapter of my journey."

"My mentor taught me how to conduct different experiments in the lab, culture cells, use different types of microscopes, as well as a lot about molecular biology," she said

"Throughout my time at this amazing company, I learned professionalism, the importance of collaboration, how to stay focused to achieve a goal which in this case is helping millions of patients with serious diseases, a lot of new scientific discoveries across many science fields, and much more," Reisman said.

Tennis started early:

Reisman said playing tennis was a natural part of growing up.

"I took tennis lessons at various clubs around Westchester, played in my town's USTA team, and attended multiple tennis camps including Nike Tennis Camp at Williams College for multiple summers," she said.

At Schechter, she played on the modified junior varsity and varsity teams, went to sectionals her last two years of high school, and achieved the All-League Award her junior and senior year.

Tennis requires concentration and strategy necessary to win games, Reisman said. "In tennis you have to be focused and also mindful when playing in order to outsmart your opponent."

College choice:

Reisman's father graduated from Binghamton, and her sister is a rising junior at the university. She called it "a great school, both academically and socially," which has the added bonus of being closer to home.

"I feel comfortable knowing that I could come home when I need to."

Reisman is the daughter of Mark Reisman, Ossining Town Justice and Rika Levin, Ossining Village Trustee.
