Ossining Students Celebrate Moms With Tea Party

OSSINING, N.Y. – When the Mother’s Day video at Ossining's St. Augustine's Catholic School stopped, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. But several of the more than 40 kindergartners at the school were confused as to why their moms were crying at the video they made.

“It’s not a sad video,” one of the students said.

“They’re not crying because they’re sad,” said teacher Leanna Manwaring. “They’re crying because they’re happy.”

The video capped off the end to a Mother’s Day Tea Party celebration Friday morning at St. Augustine’s. After working for weeks on making the video, cards and setting up the party, Manwaring and her students invited all of their moms to celebrate what they do for them every day. Teacher Barbara Bushel said she and Manwaring developed the idea last year after taking special notice to all of the things moms were doing for the students throughout the year.

“We wanted the children to take a day where everything they did was for their moms,” Bushel said, “because every day of their lives, everything their moms do is for them.”

It didn’t take long for 6-year-old Allison Corbett to come up with her favorite part of Friday’s celebration.

“My mom,” Allison said. “It was about her.”

Allison’s mom, Lori Corbett, said the day was symbolic of St. Augustine’s and its staff.

“It speaks to the community of the school and how it feels a lot more like a family than an academic environment,” Corbett said. “It was really a wonderful celebration. They really do so much to grow our kids and to become one of the family in the community. It’s really something special.”
