Ossining Schools To Host Intel Parade Saturday

OSSINING, N.Y. – The Ossining community is throwing a parade this weekend in honor of Ossining High School’s science program that was recognized as the best in the nation.

In September, Intel awarded Ossining High School its Star Innovator Award, a national honor given to the high school deemed to have the top science and math program in the country. In celebration of the school district and its programs, a parade will step off at 3 p.m. from Ossining High School and march to a rally at Ossining’s Market Square.

Ossining Town Supervisor Susanne Donnelly praised the school district and the community for coming together to celebrate the award.

“If the New York Yankees won the World Series, there would be a ticker tape parade in Manhattan. If a local Little League team won the state championship, there would be a local parade, so it is only fitting that academics should be celebrated in the same way,” Donnelly said in a press release. “We have much to celebrate.”

The award should be celebrated throughout the community and not just the school district, said Phyllis Glassman, superintendent of the Ossining School District.

“All should feel Ossining Pride in this distinction,” Glassman said in the release. “The Board of Education who provides governance and direction, the entire District Leadership Team who offers vision and support, the faculty and entire staff who devote themselves in all six schools to our students, our parents/guardians who provide support and who entrust us with the best children I can imagine, our own students – of course, and our entire Ossining community who partners with our schools in every dimension.”

In winning the award, the Ossining School District is set to receive more than $100,000 in prizes, including a cash grant from the Intel Foundation and curriculum materials, professional development, hardware and software from sponsoring companies, according to the release.

“Intel is proud to honor the Intel Schools of Distinction Award winners for their commitment to encouraging and engaging students in science and math,” said Wendy Hawkins, executive director of the Intel Foundation, in an emailed statement. “Through the recognition of these innovative programs, Intel hopes to form a greater awareness of the tangible successes schools can achieve by cultivating a hands-on science and math environment.”

In a statement that came in response to three Sleepy Hollow teenagers reportedly being beaten up by Ossining teenagers Friday night, Village of Ossining Mayor William Hanauer reminded Ossining residents that the award was an example of the greatness of Ossining’s students.

“That is what Ossining is all about,” Hanauer said Tuesday night during a Village Board of Trustees work session. “Please join us. Show your pride in this wonderful achievement of our students, the faculty, the administration of our schools and our very supportive village.”
