The Ossining High School Robotics Team, which placed third in the Jan. 21 tournament in Yonkers, is now set to move on the regional finals on Feb. 5 at Pace University, according to a statement from the Ossining school district.
The team is one of two in Ossining to experience success on Jan. 21 at a FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competition. In Chappaqua, the Robotics Wizards, a robotics team from the Anne M. Dorner Middle School, participated in the FIRST LEGO League qualifying tournament, placing well enough in the three-part event to advance to the semifinals next month in Poughkeepsie.
According to the school district, the high school team, in addition to earning third place honors, received the tournament’s “Motivate” award, which is presented to the team that “exemplifies the essence of the competition through team building, team spirit and enthusiasm.”
The high school level competition required teams to design a robot using aluminum, polycarbonate, motors, sensors and other materials, according to the school district, which said that teams built robots to perform tasks like shooting balls and pressing buttons.
As part of the competition, judges also interviewed each team about various elements of their project, including the design, engineering and outreach processes, according to the school district.
“This weekend was a blast,” said sophomore Elliot Ocheltree. “You could feel the excitement on the competition floor. The teams were in high spirits while keeping gracious professionalism as their highest priority.”
Ossining High School, which is competing in the FIRST Tech Challenge for the first time, is one of more than 20 teams regionally to participate, according to the Ossining school district, which said that more than 5,000 teams are expected to compete worldwide.
“Congratulations to our Ossining High School Robotics Club for their success in the FIRST Tech Challenge qualifying tournament,” said Superintendent of Schools Raymond Sanchez. “They should be particularly proud of the ‘Motivate’ award, which shows their excellent character, commitment and enthusiasm.”
