Transformer Fire Closes Route 9 In Ossining

This story was updated at 6:30 p.m.

OSSINING, N.Y. ? A Con Edison transformer exploded on Route 9 Wednesday afternoon, closing a portion of the road between Broad and Waller avenues in Ossining and knocking out power to more than 200 customers, Con Edison said.

Village of Ossining Police are asking residents to use Route 9A to avoid traffic delays in the area. Con Edison representatives were headed to the scene at around 4:15 p.m. There were no reported injuries or accidents as a result of the mishap, police said. It remains unclear what caused the transformer to explode but Con Edison officials said the outage would likely last until Thursday morning.

“It was pole fire that knocked out power for 218 people,” said Bob McGee, Con Edison spokesperson. McGee said the power outage affected residents from as north as Maple Place, as far east as Wolden Road, as far as Spring Street on the west and Broad Avenue on the south. “It’s going to necessitate that the pole be replaced. They can’t fix the existing pole.”

McGee said construction crews would work into the morning to replace the pole.

“This thing is going to require a whole crew and a crane out there so they’ll be working overnight on this. The lights should be out for that whole period,” he said. “It was on fire on the top of the pole and it needs to be replaced. We don’t know yet what caused it but we’re looking into it.”
