The discovery occurred after troopers conducted a traffic stop on a 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck on Interstate 84 in the town of Southeast for several violations of the vehicle and traffic law on Tuesday, April 24 at 9:40 p.m.
As police were interviewing the driver, 45-year-old Fred Agyeman of Frankfort, Kentucky, a strong odor of marijuana was detected emanating from the inside of the vehicle and marijuana plants were visible in the vehicle, police said.
Agyeman was found to be under the influence of drugs while operating the vehicle, according to police.
Further investigation discovered a loaded 9MM Walther handgun, the two marijuana plants, concentrated cannabis cartridges, multiple controlled opiate pills, and more than $2,000 in cash.
Agyeman was charged with criminal possession of a firearm (a Class C felony), as well as criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree with a prior conviction, criminal possession of a controlled substance (both Class D felonies), criminal possession of a firearm (a Class E felony), unlawful cannabis growth and driving while ability impaired by drugs.
Joseph Sam, 69, of Pawtucket, RI, and Charles E Carter III, 46, of Frankford, KY, were charged with criminal possession of a weapon (a Class C felony), criminal possession of a controlled substance (a Class D felony) and criminal possession of a firearm (a Class E felony).
