Anthony Savarese of the Bronx was convicted of criminal possession of a weapon, a class D felony, and sentenced to two-and-a-half to five years in prison and forfeiture of $30,000.
Savarese was driving on the Taconic in Putnam on July 12 when he crashed the Porsche on the shoulder of the roadway, Tendy said. The quick response to the crash by New York State Police led to the recovery of an illegal loaded .38 special revolver Savarese kept in the center console of the car, Tendy added.
Savarese left the scene but was spotted a short distance away where he admitted fleeing the crashed vehicle and leaving the loaded firearm behind, Tendy said.
Savarese has a previous felony conviction for criminal possession of a controlled substance,
Tendy said Assistant DA Joseph Charbonneau "did a great job prosecuting this case."
"Illegal firearms in the hands of felons are extremely dangerous,” Tendy said. “I am grateful that the New York State Police recovered the weapon before anyone was hurt.
"Those who unlawfully possess weapons not only put citizens in danger, but they also jeopardize the second amendment rights of law abiding citizens. It will not be tolerated.”
