OSSINING, N.Y. – Herbert J. Lipton of Ossining died at his home in the Atria of Ossining on Saturday, March 19. He was 94.
He was born in the Bronx on Nov. 16, 1921, to Isaac and Sarah Lipschitz. He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School, attended St. John's University, then enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II He rose to the level of sergeant in the Army Air Forces and was stationed in Panama. After the war, he embarked on a long career in the menswear business, forming his own company with offices in the Empire State Building. He retired after 62 years at the age of 87.
He married Beulah Marcus in 1946, with whom he had four children. They resided first in Stuyvesant Town, New York City, then settled in Hartsdale.
He married Barbara (Bobbe) Webb in 1976. They lived in Briarcliff and Cortlandt Manor. They remained married until her recent death on Saturday, Jan. 30.
He is survived by three of his children from his first marriage, Francie Williamson, James Lipton and Ira Lipton; stepchildren Jennifer Webb Babcock and Eric Webb, along with their spouses and children.
His daughter from his first marriage, Holly Lipton, predeceased him in 1979.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 2021 Albany Post Road, Croton-On-Hudson.
