OSSINING, N.Y. – The Village of Ossining continued working Wednesday to recover from the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.
Village Manager Richard Leins said Con Edison workers, along with Ossining’s Department of Public Works, were out on the roads affected by downed trees as well as trees resting on power lines.
Leins estimated that downed trees blocked approximately 10 to 12 roads and that about 50 percent of the village was without power. The village is first working to address the tree and infrastructure problems throughout the town and will then move to restoring the power.
“We’re hoping that we’ll move to the restoration phase pretty quickly,” Leins said.
The D.A.R.E. Halloween event at the Caputo Community Center at 95 Broadway is still on from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Leins recommended this event as an alternative to trick-or-treating and expects a much larger crowd than the already substantial ones from years past.
“We just encourage people because of the situation with all the downed power lines and the trees, we advise that they approach it very cautiously,” Leins said. “Our best advice is not to go out tonight.”
The community center has also doubled as a shelter since Monday, and Leins said residents have come and gone to use the facilities or to get warm if they do not have heat in their own homes.
Leins said the shelter would remain open for as long as is necessary.
