Ossining Surgeon, EMTs Are Honored for Service

OSSINING, N.Y. – Dr. Robert Seebacher of Ossining, an orthopedic surgeon, has immense respect for first responders.

“The idea of showing up somewhere where there are hurt or sick people, dirt or blood or grease or broken glass — it's daunting,” he said to a small crowd of volunteer EMTs, noting he has come to respect “how difficult the job is for people who serve in the way that you do.”

Seebacher works at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center and is the chair of the Mid-Hudson Ambulance Service, which provides emergency services to residents in Ossining and New Castle. The ambulance service also helps support the Croton Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Volunteers with the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps and community leaders gathered Saturday to honor emergency responders and Seebacher as part of National Emergency Medical Services Week. EMTs were on hand to help residents learn more about what the Ossining Ambulance Corps does on emergency calls.

“It's nice for us to have a week where we can go out to the community and show that this is what we do,” corps Capt. Nick Franzoso said. “They can experience what an ambulance is without having to call us on an emergency call.”

Emil Nigro is director of emergency services at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center. He praised the first responders Saturday and said, “This really is a team effort.”

“The better the care in the pre-hospital area, the easier it is for us in the Emergency Department to really care for these patients,” he said.
