Ossining Republicans Get Behind Romney in Primary

OSSINING, N.Y. – Ossining and Briarcliff Manor Republicans say Mitt Romney is their man on Tuesday.

Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas U.S. Congress member Ron Paul and former Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum are on the ballot Tuesday as local Republicans go to the polls for the primary. With Santorum dropping out recently and Romney receiving victories in other states, local Republicans are expecting Romney to win New York in a landslide.

“I’m positive that Romney is going to be the nominee and I’m extremely happy with him and I see him turning this country around,” said Peter Tripodi, vice chairman of the Republican Party in Ossining. “I was a big fan of Herman Cain and donated to his campaign. When he dropped out I was upset, but I thought the campaign was a good opportunity to see a diverse field of candidates and I think Romney rightly came out of that as the strongest candidate.”

Tripodi, who also serves as a member on the Ossining Town Council, said he was willing to give Barack Obama a chance in 2008.

“Right now this country is in a hole and we were promised a fix when President Obama took office and I believed that he would be able to do it and I put party aside,” Tripodi said. “But he didn’t deliver and I think Romney will and he has the background and experience to do it.”

Briarcliff Manor resident John O’Leary, who served as vice chairman on the Westchester County Board of Legislators in 1985, said he was pleased to see Romney winning the primaries in other states and expects the same to follow in New York.

“There should’ve been no slate of candidates,” O’Leary said. “He should’ve run unopposed. It’s been a long time since we’ve had such a strong candidate. I think he’s going to clean up and win them all.”
