When Luz Breese goes out shopping during her lunch break, she often encounters people who ask her about Ossinings recreation programs.
Its a good feeling, the office assistant for Ossinings Joseph G. Caputo Community Center said. They always ask me, Are you going to be back (to the center?) Can I call you?
Breese was born in Mexico and emigrated here when she was eight years old. She has worked as a civil service employee for 16 years, including four years in Ossining and 12 in Mt. Kisco and North Salem, where she lives.
Breese speaks fluent Spanish, a skill which makes many Spanish-speaking residents more comfortable interacting with her.
I think one of the most rewarding parts of my job is when a customer lets me know that they are very pleased with my assistance, Breese said. They say, Luz, thank you so much. Youve really helped me.
Senior citizens, especially, tend to shower Breese with love.
They come by, they bring me flowers, they bring me cookies, they say, Hi honey, hi beautiful, and they give me a big smile, Breese said.
Of the many programs the Ossining community center offers, Breese thinks the open swim times at the pool and the programs for youth, including tennis and jujitsu lessons, are some of the best deals.
If you are a village resident, a $2 ID card can give you unlimited open swim for a year, she pointed out. And the youth lessons are so affordable.
Breese has a cosmetology license and, when not working at the community center, she practices styling hair on her friends and three kids. She also enjoys cooking, sewing clothes for herself and her family and reading non-fiction books.
When I go home, I look to cook, feed, and then by nine oclock, jump into bed and read, she said. And during my breaks, I also read.
