OSSINING, N.Y. An Ossining Dunkin' Donuts employee says he got a good look at a man who may have robbed a 19-year-old Hopewell Junction man at knifepoint with an accomplice Wednesday morning.
Village of Ossining Police say the robbery took place Wednesday morning outside the Dunkin Donuts on South Highland Avenue. Police said the victim was lured to the area after agreeing to meet someone named Jeff in order to purchase two virtual party hats from the software game Runescape, according to a press release. The robbery victim described Jeff as a male Hispanic of about 5 10 height, stocky weight with short dark-colored hair, according to a police press release.
A server, whom The Daily Ossining declined to name because he hadn't spoken to police yet, said Thursday he saw a stocky Hispanic kid who matched Jeffs description sitting outside the Dunkin' Donuts.
I came outside for a cigarette and saw him sitting there with a laptop. He was a little heavier set and had a big, thicker laptop, the server said. Id be able to pick him out if I saw him again.
The server said he walked back inside and never saw a crime committed and when he looked back outside 15 minutes later, the man with the laptop was gone.
Village of Ossining Police said the victim agreed to meet a person he contacted through Craigslist. The man reportedly agreed to meet Jeff at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Jeff had a laptop under his arm and got in the victims car, according to the release.
Lt. Michael McElroy said the victim told police a second Hispanic male standing about 5-foot-8 came up to his car and put a knife to his throat.
Jeff then told the victim to remain calm and turn over his wallet, cell phone and cash, according to the release. The victim complied and both men fled the area on foot.
McElroy said the victim reported that he lost $1,150 in cash and a cell phone worth about $600. McElroy said early Thursday that he wasnt aware of any witnesses in the incident.
There are none that we know of, but theyre trying to develop some, McElroy said, adding that he wasnt aware of any other crimes that have occurred in the same location.
McElroy recommended that residents be very careful in purchasing items online.
Particularly if youre meeting strangers for some sort of business transaction you really need to think twice, he said. You dont have much protection with who youre meeting. And carrying cash instead of a check leaves you very vulnerable to victimization.
