OSSINING, N.Y. Its common for church congregations to double on the major holidays. But congregations are expected to quadruple for the Easter weekend in Ossining.
Its not because some members of the congregation only attend church on holy days, but because Ossinings Trinity Episcopal Church, Briarcliff Manors All Saints Episcopal Church and Scarboroughs St. Marys Episcopal Church are joining with Ossinings St. Pauls on-the-Hill Episcopal Church for Saturdays Easter evening liturgy. Trinitys Rev. Cooper Conway said the four churches are celebrating the holy weekend together and have decided to share services. Likewise, St. Pauls congregation joined at Trinity for Good Friday services.
(Good Friday) is the most solemn day of our year but St. Pauls and Trinity share a priest so were coming together, Cooper said. Its a way for us to have fun and reach out to get more people to see the churches. We also split our time evenly with all four churches in the services on Saturday so the community gets to know the reverends of the other churches and so we get to know those in our community.
But its not the only time the churches have come together, said St. Marys Rev. Sandra Seaborn.
The four churches do it about four times a year, Seaborn said, noting that the last joint service was held on Christmas Day at All Saints. Its very fun but its also encouraging and very supportive. And not just for us but also our congregations.
The Holy Saturday services begin at 7:30 p.m. at St Pauls on-the-Hill, 40 Ganung Drive, Ossining. On Easter Sunday, there are 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services at All Saints and a 9:30 a.m. Easter festival and Easter egg hunt following services at St. Pauls. There is also a 10 a.m. resurrection festival celebration at St. Marys and 11:15 a.m. services and Easter egg hunt at Trinity.
