Now, a new social networking website by an Ossining resident is entering  the field.

Dr. Nitin Nayak has launched myPEPR.com (my Personal Event Planning Robot), a social network that allows people to find interesting local events and friends that would be interested in attending the events at a convenient time.

The new platform launched using Ossining as a test market, highlighting many events of the Ossining bicentennial and its Ossining in 3D program.

Users of myPEPR.com can organize an event, comment and read their friends' comments, post photos, and create a diary of social activities.

“Today's popular social networking platforms have been great for bringing people across the globe closer through online relationships,” said Nayak. “Facebook and Google Plus tend to be centered around people, while at myPEPR, the event is the focus."

Nayak said he hopes to help local communities become more socially active by allowing friends more capability to plan events.

"We are trying to bring social networking to local communities," Nayak said. "Facebook and Google are good for the information exchange, but they are not really helpful to small communities or local businesses. This platform allows people to meet face to face."

Nayak was inspired to create myPEPR after wanting to go to an event in New York but not wanting to go by himself and not knowing which of his friends would be interested.

"Who do you go with?" Nayak said. "Most of my Facebook friends are long distance. People are so socially risk averse. They don't like calling people and getting rejected."

Nayak said if he knew a friend was interested in the subject, he'd be open to inviting them, which is where myPEPR came in.

With Ossining, myPEPR could find friends that were interested in activities like Harborfest and were also available that weekend.

"Knowing who would be interested in joining you, you can decide who to invite," Nayak said. "You can see who is interested in architecture, jazz music or dancing."

Nayak said the reception has been positive and once people see the idea, they really love it.

"People can quickly plan things and find friends to go with," Nayak said. "If you become friends with someone through myPEPR you can know more about them and invite them on a shared interest."
