OSSINING, N.Y. -- Neighbors Link, the organization representing Diego Puma Macancela, the 19-year-old detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is pushing back on reports that Macancela will be deported Friday.

"There is no indication he is going to be deported," Carola Bracco, executive director of Neighbor's Link said. "ICE is still reviewing his case."

Bracco said elected officials are continuing to lobby on Macancela's behalf. While no deportation date has been set, the next plane deporting people to Ecuador is June 23.

Macancela was recently moved to a detention facility in Louisiana. Macancela had been detained at the Orange County Correctional Facility with his mother. His mother was moved to a different facility in Louisiana.

Neighbors Link filed a second stay of removal on Macancela's behalf Friday. The first stay was denied when ICE said he has gang ties in his native Ecuador, Neighbors Link said. According to a document obtained by Daily Voice, the Ecuadorian government said Macancela had no criminal record and no record of gang activity.

Macancela and his mother had been ordered removed by an immigration judge last November. He was detained on June 8, the same day as his senior prom. His mother was detained on June 7.

Macancela's detention has attracted worldwide attention. A petition has attracted more than 21,900 signatures, with signees from countries like Sweden, Germany, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Protests have also been held outside Ossining High School

Ossining School Superintendent Raymond Sanchez said they would welcome back Macancela to finish his final exams and graduate high school.
