OSSINING, N.Y. -- Teatowns popular Nature Girls summer camp program is in its final session this summer.
Nature Girls was designed in 2011 as a way for girls (8-12 years old) to continue their exploration and interest in nature and science in a safe and engaging environment.
The program focuses on encouraging girls to get out and truly be wild women. In addition to the classic Teatown summer camp experience, Nature Girls focuses on cooperation, self-confidence, and leadership skills as they follow in the footsteps of Jane Goodall and other great nature girls. Nature Girls welcomes members of the surrounding community to visit with the campers and share their nature girl experiences, offering the girls a glimpse at possible career options in environmental fields. In the first camp session this summer, Teatown welcomed wildlife rehabilitator Maggie Ciarcia, nature guide Erica Kolbrenner and wildlife photographer, Bonnie Talluto to share their stories and work with the girls. Nature Girls also recently welcomed the women from Strawtown Art & Garden Studio, as they meandered along Bailey Brook and created paintings from rock pigments. In addition to exploring the habitats around Teatown and studying the animals they find along the way, the girls participate in activities designed for self-awareness.
Teatowns educators have witnessed a positive impact on the girls participating in the Nature Girls program, noticing a boost in their self-esteem and confidence, as well as a greater intellectual curiosity about the world of nature," said Teatowns Executive Director Kevin Carter.
"The program has proven so successful that Teatown will be implementing an after-school Nature Girls Program in the fall.Registration for the Nature Girls after-school program is under way. The program will be held for eight weeks on Tuesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. (starting Tuesday, Sept. 30).
