Ossining Dancers Compete in 'America's Got Talent'

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Turn on your television and maybe you'll catch a glimpse of some local stars catching the attention of Howard Stern or Howie Mandel.

The Sleepy Hollow-based New York Irish Dance Company is featured on this year's season of the NBC reality show “America's Got Talent.” Twenty-four students from the tri-state area are competing on the show with their blend of traditional Irish dance and modern music.

Dance instructor Maureen Collins said the show found out about the company through a promotional video that was posted on YouTube. The video showcases the company's modern costumes and props — including lights and trampolines.

“They probably told me that they were interested in us in January, and then in March they told us that we passed the first audition,” Collins said, noting that the team's audition in was a few days after it competed in the Irish dancing world championship.

Collins helped start the company in 2011 to give Irish dancers a creative outlet to competition dancing, she said. The company practices two hours each Friday in the basement of its Beekman Avenue studio.

Collins said the team's fate in the competition would be answered in July when the show begins its live performances.
