To the Editor,
Let’s leave aside political differences and look at the current deportation practices through the lens of human dignity. We are a nation of immigrants proud of our history in welcoming the “...huddled masses yearning to breathe free...” Just as it was when our ancestors came here, immigrants come fleeing various forms of persecution, violence, and poverty in search of a better life for their family. We are now turning our back on thousands of hard working, law abiding people from many nations and treating them as criminals. We are tearing apart families, plunging families into poverty when wage earners are lost, leaving children without parents, and frightening people so much they are afraid to report crimes perpetuated upon them and witnessed by them. These cruel policies demean our nation and make us all less safe by terrifying our neighbors.
We, the members of the Social Justice and Immigration arm of the Croton on Hudson Indivisible, want to publicly raise our voices in support of our immigrant communities in Croton and Ossining. We want them to know that we appreciate their contributions to our respective communities and we want them to be safe.
For those of you who are wondering what you can do to help, we would like to offer a few suggestions: attend rallies in support of immigrant’s rights, look up your Legislator at http://westchesterlegislators.com/legislators.html and call him/her asking for support for the IPA. Westchester must pass the Immigrant Protection Act (IPA) - Bill #9928 next week. Also, please call County Executive Rob Astorino and ask for his support, 914-995-2900. Let us keep in mind the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."
