Historian Discusses Ossining's Past At Cedar Manor

OSSINING, N.Y. -- Ossining Village Historian Dana White regularly entertains residents of the Cedar Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, with presentations on such topics as the Old Leatherman, Sing Sing Prison, and village landmarks.

The artifacts White discussed during her visit on March 10 included a vintage fireman’s helmet owned by a member of the Hilliker family, a sign from the days when Ossining was still called Sing Sing, an old lantern, and several prison artifacts, including 19th century handcuffs and a prison-made pistol.

“I really enjoy speaking to the residents of Cedar Manor because many of them are from Ossining and have precious memories of the place,” says White. “They are truly living history. Often, they’ll share their own memories, which I love. After my prison presentation, one of the residents told me her husband had worked as an eye doctor there.”

White's spring presentation? Ossining baseball -- of course.
